Aviyal melodrama

"Aviyal" is one of the main dishes of Kerala cuisine, made of veggies cut into longer strips, curd and coconut oil.

After continuous days of having sick restaurant food, me and my roomie Sandeep ( the other two guys at home were kicked out, one permanently for his family arrived, and the other one gone for a month vacation) thought to have a cooking spree and try our hands on various dishes, at home! We went to Excel Mart ( an indian grocery nearby ), and as usual, grabbed things left and right.

All set for a perfect cooking plan!

We opened the Aviyal mix we bought - it is a mixture of frozen veggies cut into longer pieces exclusively designed for this dish..

It`s been ages since we`d tasted this delicious dish..C`mon this is going to be our day! We washed the necessary vessels out of the already clogged up sink. In the meanwhile Sandeep started playing recipes in Youtube - our cooking Guru..which has always lead us on the right direction! We both watched it in unfazed attention..

The frying pan is on, and the frozen veggies from the mix are right on top of it...with the sunflower oil - the only ingredient which is violating the Youtube instructions (It said that coconut oil is a must!)..At the same time frozen shredded coconut was thawed, and mixed in curd with green chillies for a delicious gravy....

The vegetables were icy, it has to melt at first, and then get boiled...hence I thought of taking a short nap, so as Sandeep, and went away from the kitchen...

Not more than fifteen minutes passed - Alas, the fire alarm showed signs of inviting the Fire Brigade taste this beleaguered dish..
Our dreams got shattered as the Aviyal got over-fried, and the plight of this very special dish became pathetic, and there is only smoke everywhere in the house..

"The flame that lit the battles wreck,
Shone round him o`er the dead"..

We quickly opened the doors and the balcony glasses to let the smoke go off and not to allow the alarms to whistle..The funeral ceremony was carried out, and in the end we somehow managed successfully to wash the frying pan which had a thick layer of ashes by then...

It was a good lesson, never ever go to rest while the cooking gas is on..

Keeping this debacle in mind, the cooking saga continues...We succeeded in innovative dishes, with the hopes kindling our spirits - that we can taste all of our favorite items prepared by our own Moms shortly, as we both are heading to India for a short vacation to be with our families, craving to see us... after long time!!!

Counting down the days for that exciting moments!
